The grammar

Most superlative adjectives end with an –est. However, some superlative remain the same but are preceded by the adverb ‘most’. People often use superlative adjectives when giving their opinions.



  • Carlos Slim Helú is the richest man in the world.

  • Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.

  • The United States of America is the most powerful country in the world.

  • English is the most important language in the world.

  • Jennifer Connolly is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.

  • I think (that) Tom Hanks is the greatest / the best / the most talented actor in Hollywood.










Lead-in




There are many ways to elicit this target language. Here are a few suggestions.

Get the students to stand up. Choose the tallest and shortest and get your learners to make a sentence about him/her. ____________ is the tallest / shortest person in the class. Ask everyone his or her ages. Pick the oldest and youngest and get your learners to make sentences. (Be careful with this one!) ____________ is the oldest / youngest person in the class.

Presentation

Using pictures get your learners to identify objects, places or people. You can find a lot of pictures on the Internet. Make sure your learners are familiar with these objects, people or places. You MUST be able to make a sentence with a superlative adjective about them. Here are a few examples (you can think of your own): The River Nile/The Vatican/Mount Everest/Bill Gates/David Beckham/China/Spanish food/The cheetah, etc.


Controlled Practice

Put sts into 2 teams and explain that you will holding a running quiz. You will ask a question and a sts from each team must run up to the board and write down the answer as quickly as they can – each team member will have to take a turn. The quickest team with the correct answer wins a point – the team with the most points wins! Here are some questions you can use:

  1. What is the largest thing in your house?

  2. What is the fastest land animal in the world? (answer – the cheetah)

  3. What is the longest river in the world? (answer – The Nile)

  4. What is the tallest building in the world? (answer – the Petrona Towers in Kuala Lumpur)

  5. What is deepest ocean in the world? (answer – the Atlantic)

  6. What is the most expensive thing you have ever bought?

  7. What is the most useful thing you own?

  8. What is the nicest thing you can buy for a girl?

  9. What is the smallest thing you have in your bag?

  10. What is the most unusual thing you have ever done?

  11. What do you think is the friendliest pet a person can have?

  12. What do you think is the most dangerous animal in the world?

  13. Who do you think is the most intelligent person in the world?

  14. Who do you think is the best actor in America?

  15. Who do you think is the most beautiful actress in Britain?


Production

Get your students to make their own quiz – perhaps about things of their country. During this writing session make sure students work together and monitor what the students write. After the appointed time, the students can use their own questions to do a quiz with the students.
