Body parts
Level Beginner/Elementary
Students already know Some nouns and very basic sentences, eg how to introduce themselves and say where they are from
The grammar You are teaching nouns so concentrate here on the pronunciation – sts will learn how to use these words in simple sentences once they have mastered the vocabulary.
Lead-in
Draw a circle on the board and ask sts to speculate as to what it is – they can use mime to show you (A balloon? A ball? A sun? – It’s actually a head. Now draw the body with arms and legs (as a stick figure is fine) and hand out body parts drawn onto individual pieces of paper for sts to stick them onto the board in the right place - make sure you include eyes, ears, mouth, nose, shoulders, knees, toes.

Presentation
Now elicit the different parts of the body on the board from sts and drill the pronunciation chorally and individually. Once sts are pronouncing the words correctly and confidently you can begin to write the words on the board – make sure you include the plurals too. You could get sts up to write the words down too – ask them who knows what each word is and how to spell it to decide who will do each one.
Controlled Practice
Put the sts into pairs. On the board have a pre-prepared sheet with the pictures of the body parts in one column, and the names of each body part in another column. Sts should work in their pairs to match the words to the pictures. Once they have finished get each pair up in turn to do an example or 2 on the board to make sure they all have the correct answers.
Production
Teach sts the song “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” and go through it a couple of times. You can get sts to fill in the words as you go (ie just point to your head, your shoulders, etc and get them to say the words, instead of you). Now do the song again, but this time mix up the order, by pointing at the body parts out of turn, eg “Head, shoulders, eyes and ears” with sts calling out the body parts as you point to them. Now ask sts to each take a turn in creating the order of the song by pointing to a body part and the other sts putting it into the song.
Homework
Think of a suitable activity or piece of homework you could set your sts to finish off this class.
