Animals

Level

Beginner

Students already know

Sts are very low level and they know how to introduce themselves and simple words. They can count from 1 to 10.

The grammar

Sts are still learning basic vocabulary (nouns) at this stage so you need to concentrate more on the correct pronunciation.

Lead-in

Prepare some flashcards with different animals on them and make sure you have 2 of each card. You will need 8 animals in total (ie 16 cards). Ask sts to sit around on the floor in a group and place all the cards face down between them. Turn over 2 of the cards and if the pictures match you keep the cards. If not, turn both of them face down again. Then ask a st to take a turn and go around the class until all of the cards have been matched up.

Presentation

Take 1 set of flashcards from the lead-in. Show each of the cards individually to sts and say the name of the animal for each one. Go through the cards a couple of times and then drill sts chorally and then individually.

Controlled Practice

Place the flashcards around the classroom and show sts where they are – you could get sts to help you place them around the class too. Now, make the sound of one of the animals and walk over to the flashcard with the relevant picture and say the name of the animal (eg “moo” – walk to the picture of the cow and say “cow”). Do another one or two and get sts to join in with you (use body language to motion them to join you). Then you can stand in the middle of the room and do the animal noises with sts walking to the correct pictures and saying the names of the animals. Go through each of the animals a couple of times.

Free practice

Stick the flashcards to the board or arrange them at the front of the class so all the sts can see them. Now ask sts to stand in a group and hand one a soft toy. The st with the toy says the name of one animal (cow) and then throws the soft toy to another st. The next st says the animal chosen by the previous st and adds another one (cow, dog). Then throw to another st and add another animal (cow, dog, chicken), etc. You can keep going until everyone has had a turn and make sure that all the animals are used (you can remove flashcards as the sts say them so sts can then choose from the pictures that remain. If the sts are remembering well at this point you could add an element of competition! Keep going round but now if a st gets the order wrong or forgets an animal they have to sit out – who’s the last st standing?

Production

Think of a suitable activity or piece of homework you could set your sts to finish off this class.
