Tense Use Form Examples

  after the following verbs (to love, to hate, to think, etc.) The plane leaves at 2pm tomorrow.
  future meaning: timetables, programmes  
       
Present Progressive/Continuous something is happening at the same time of speaking or around it to be (am/are/is) + infinitive + -ing I'm working at my PC now.
  future meaning: when you have already decided and arranged to do it (a fixed plan, date) I'm flying to London tomorrow morning.
       
Past Simple action took place in the past, mostly connected with an expression of time (no connection to the present) regular: infinitive + -ed I worked in France when I was younger.
  irregular: went, saw, etc I went to Spain last year.
       
Past Progressive or Past Continuous an action happened in the middle of another action was/were + infinitive + -ing The door bell rang while I was having dinner.
  someone was doing sth. at a certain time (in the past) I was going home at 4pm yesterday.
       
Present Perfect you say that sth. has happened or is finished in the past and it has a connection to the present have/has + past participle* It has been a hard night and I am tired now.
  action started in the past and continues up to the present *(infinitive + -ed) or irregular verbs, such as, been, seen, written etc. I have lived in Scotland for many years.
       
Present Perfect Progressive/Continuous action began in the past and has just stopped have/has + been + infinitive + -ing I have just been running a marathon.

Past Perfect mostly when two actions in a story are related to each other: the action which had already happened is put into Past Perfect, the other action into Simple Past had + *(infinitive + -ed) or irregular verbs, such as, been, seen, written etc. I had written 3 books before I turned 40.
       
Past Perfect Progressive/Continuous how long something had been happening before something else happened had + been + infinitive + ing I had been working for hours before he turned up.
       
will + inifinitive predictions about the future will + infinitive I'll rain tomorrow.
  you decide to do sth. spontaneously at the time of speaking, you haven't made a decision before I think I'll have a burger.
  main clause in type 1 of the 'if' clauses If I walk, I'll get wet.
       
going to + inifnitive Future intentions be (am/are/is) + going to + infinitive I'm going to visit Spain next year.
  Prediction based on current evidence It's going to rain.
       
Future Progressive/Continuous An action will be in progress at a certain time in the future. This action has begun before the certain time. will + be + infinitive + ing I'll be working at 6pm tomorrow.
  Something happens because it normally happens. Jack will be drinking in the pub as usual.
  Setting the scene The sun was shining and the the birds were singing.
       
Future Perfect sth. will already have happened before a certain time in the future will + have + past participle I'll have painted three doors by this time tomorrow.
       
Future Perfect Progressive/Continuous sth. will already have happened before a certain time in the future will + have + been + infinitive + ing I'll have been writing for fours hours by lunchtime.
